What to expect
Know what to expect before you arrive.
Evaluations are thorough but straightforward. Here is how to prepare, and what happens during and after your visit.
Day-of preparation
A little preparation goes a long way. These tips help your evaluation go smoothly.
-
Arrive a few minutes early
Plan to arrive a little before your scheduled time so you can check in calmly and settle in before the evaluation begins.
-
Come rested
A good night of sleep helps everyone, especially children, engage fully during observation and testing. Avoid scheduling over nap time when possible.
-
Bring completed paperwork
If you received intake forms ahead of time, bring them completed or submit them electronically before your visit. Incomplete forms may delay your appointment.
-
Pack essentials for children
A comfort item, snack, or favorite activity can help young children feel at ease during breaks.
During and after your visit
-
Visit length
Most evaluations require one or two in-person visits, each lasting 45–90 minutes depending on age and complexity.
-
Who attends
A family member or caregiver typically stays for children and younger adolescents. For adults, you may attend alone or bring someone for support.
-
What happens
The psychologist conducts clinical interviews, structured observation, and validated assessments including ADOS. There is no single "pass or fail", we look at the full picture.
-
After the visit
Expect a results call with your psychologist in about two weeks, followed by a written report with findings and recommendations.
